该机构主任研究员荏原充宏率领的研究小组，将能够吸附肌酐的沸石混合到树脂中，制作出了一种极细的纤维，并将这种纤维制成无纺布。血清实验显示，只要约１６克纤维，就可以将体重６０公斤的人在１小时之内产生的肌酐全部吸附干净。

肌酐是血液中的一种低分子尿毒症毒素，由肌酸分解形成，是反映肾功能情况的主要指标。肾脏功能正常运作时，肌酐会经尿液排泄至体外，但肾衰竭患者的肾脏无法过滤干净血液中的代谢废物和尿毒症毒素，所以必须进行透析。

除了肌酐，尿毒症毒素还有很多种。研究小组认为，通过更换沸石的种类，可以制造出吸附其他尿毒症毒素的人造纤维。这一成果的论文已经刊登在新一期《生物材料科学》杂志上。

目前，仅日本国内就有３０多万慢性肾衰竭患者接受透析治疗，每年需要耗费约２００亿美元的医疗费。透析装置较大且费水费电，给患者造成很多不便。
